ON THE FLOOR. IN THE FILE. INTO PRACTICE.A delivery crosses a pedestrian route. Maintenance starts during production. A contractor arrives before the scope has been agreed. These are the moments a safety system has to work.
We help Birmingham businesses turn health and safety responsibilities into practical arrangements. That can mean assessing a specific task, checking a management system or defining the advice needed when your team does not have all the relevant knowledge in-house.
The starting point is the work itself. We ask what happens, who is exposed and which controls people rely on, then help identify the next decisions. A document has value when it gives a manager or worker a clear basis for action.
Our service is for business buyers, including facilities managers, contractors, commercial landlords, manufacturers, schools and office teams. Tell us whether you need help with one concern or a wider review, and the scope can be matched to that requirement.

Employers have duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 to protect employees and others affected by their undertaking, so far as is reasonably practicable. In Birmingham, the relevant framework is the law applying in England. The detail of your arrangements depends on the risks created by the business.
The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require suitable and sufficient risk assessment and competent assistance. This does not mean every employer must purchase external consultancy. If your own people have the capability to manage the risks, they may provide the competent help required.
External advice becomes useful when the operation is complex, a particular hazard needs specialist knowledge or internal staff need support with a defined issue. The person advising should understand the work, recognise the limits of their competence and explain the basis for recommendations.
The employer remains responsible for managing health and safety. Advice needs someone inside the business who can approve changes, provide resources and check completion. An appointment should say what the adviser covers and how their findings reach the people who act on them.
Written records have a role, but the legal duties are wider than paperwork. Employers with five or more employees must record significant risk assessment findings and have a written policy, as set out in HSE guidance. Smaller employers still need to manage risks and have a policy.
We help distinguish routine management decisions from work needing a separate specialist. A general site review does not replace statutory equipment examinations, technical testing or other assessments outside its scope. These boundaries should be clear before an assignment is agreed.
Describe your activities, premises and reason for seeking advice. We clarify the outcome you need, the work areas included and the information that would make an assessment or review useful.
Where a site visit is part of the scope, representative activities are observed and discussed with relevant staff. Existing records are checked against practice, including less frequent tasks such as cleaning or maintenance.
Findings should distinguish immediate concerns from improvements that need planning. The report or assessment explains the issue, the control required and the decisions your business needs to make.
Your management team assigns responsibility and agrees how completion will be checked. Follow-up support can be included where required, with review triggers that respond to changes in the work.
Before a visit, agree access, induction and any restrictions. Arrange for someone who understands the work to be available, and tell us if the relevant operation runs on a particular shift. A quiet walk-through cannot always reveal the risks of a busy loading period or an occasional shutdown.
Production and storage operations often bring people, vehicles, materials and maintenance into the same space. We ask about goods movements, isolation arrangements, supervision and the less obvious exposures created by the process. A generic premises checklist may miss the task causing the greatest concern.
For businesses using substances or producing dust, mist or fume, a COSHH assessment can examine the actual exposure. A supplier’s safety data sheet supports that work, but cannot tell you how well the controls perform in your own activity.
Commercial fit-outs and alterations need early decisions about duties, information and coordination. Our CDM consultancy page explains the commercial client context and the distinction between advisory support and a formal dutyholder appointment. Identify these requirements before work starts, rather than trying to reconstruct them at handover.
In an occupied building, your concern may be contractor access, maintenance work or responsibilities shared with another organisation. We help clarify which activities and common areas sit within the agreed review. Your arrangements need to account for staff, visitors and the people carrying out work on your behalf.
A health and safety audit can test how responsibilities, records and reporting routes connect. When responsibilities have changed, policy writing support can help put the current arrangements into a usable document.
New contracts can introduce unfamiliar premises, activities or evidence requirements. Share the client’s actual request so the work addresses what is needed. Competent-person support can supplement internal capability, while a targeted assessment can address a single task without replacing everything your business already uses.
Birmingham’s business landscape includes the offices of Colmore Business District, the creative premises of Digbeth and manufacturing locations around Aston. The city council identifies the Advanced Manufacturing Hub in Aston, close to the M6 and Aston Expressway. These are different settings for work, with different questions about access, activities and responsibility.
Digbeth includes the Custard Factory and The Bond within its creative and cultural quarter. Shared premises and converted buildings can prompt questions about contractor coordination and the boundary between occupier and building management duties. The relevant arrangements must be checked at the actual site, rather than assumed from the district.
Tyseley’s industrial setting includes the Birmingham Energy Innovation Centre and a hydrogen refuelling pilot site, as described by the city council. We do not assume that nearby businesses share the same activities or hazards. Your own processes, substances and maintenance arrangements remain the basis of the scope.
We also welcome enquiries from Solihull, Smethwick, Oldbury, West Bromwich and Sutton Coldfield. The locations page explains the local coverage in more detail. Provide the site postcode and access requirements so location, suitability and the proposed visit arrangements can be checked.
The cost of health and safety consultancy depends on the questions to be answered and the evidence needed. Site size matters, but a compact workshop with complex processes may need more specialist time than a larger office. The number of activities, premises and shifts helps define the effort involved.
Existing records also affect the scope. Clear, current information can support a focused review, while missing responsibilities or inconsistent documents may need investigation before useful advice can be given. Tell us if the work relates to an incident, enforcement correspondence or a customer deadline so those circumstances can be considered.
Ask whether a proposal includes site time, document preparation, a findings discussion and any follow-up. Testing, exposure monitoring and other specialist services should be defined separately where required. There should be no uncertainty about what is included when you decide to proceed.
Useful outputs vary by assignment. A risk assessment should explain the task and controls, an audit should identify findings against its criteria, and a policy should allocate responsibilities. Agree the format and the people who need to use the result before the work begins.
Implementation deserves a decision too. Your team may be able to complete the actions internally, or it may need support reviewing proposed changes. A report should not be treated as evidence that a control has been installed, briefed or checked when those steps have yet to happen.
Start with the concern, your business activity and the site postcode. If you do not yet know which service is appropriate, that is enough for an initial scope discussion. Please avoid sending sensitive personal information or detailed medical records through the enquiry form.
Direct answers about scope, responsibilities and getting ready.
Read all buyer questionsA health and safety consultant is not compulsory for every business. Employers must have access to competent assistance, which may come from someone capable within the organisation. External advice can help where risks or knowledge gaps require it. The employer keeps responsibility for managing the work and putting appropriate controls into practice.
Health and safety consultancy can include a review of existing arrangements, task risk assessments, workplace audits and advice on responsibilities. The scope depends on the work your business carries out. We agree the premises, activities and deliverables before work starts so you understand which issues are covered and what needs separate specialist input.
Health and safety consultancy costs depend on the activities, site complexity, existing records and level of support required. A targeted assessment differs from an ongoing advisory arrangement or a construction project. Send a short outline of your premises and concerns so a defined scope and quotation can be prepared without guessing at the work.
Existing safety documents can be a useful starting point if they describe the current operation. We review relevant records alongside how work is carried out, then identify what can be retained or needs revision. Send the documents requested during scoping rather than replacing a whole system before the actual gaps have been established.
Birmingham businesses can enquire about commercial premises, construction work and workplace safety arrangements. Relevant buyers include facilities teams, manufacturers, contractors, commercial landlords, schools and office managers. Tell us the business activity and site postcode so the required experience, location and type of support can be checked before an appointment is agreed.
A health and safety consultant helps you understand and manage your duties but does not take over the employer’s responsibility. Your business still needs to make decisions, allocate resources and supervise its work. The appointment should define the advice required, who acts on it and how changes or concerns are brought to the adviser.
A health and safety site visit is more useful when current assessments, incident records and relevant equipment or substance information are available. Arrange access to representative activities and someone who understands the work. Explain restricted areas, induction requirements and unusual operations in advance so the agreed visit can focus on meaningful evidence.
A work activity, a document gap or a project about to start. Give us the outline and we can establish the support required.
Include your business activity, the site postcode and any deadline. We ask for your agreement before sharing your enquiry with a suitable local firm.
